After reading through chapter 9 I have figured out what my best listening style is and what my best note taking system is. My best listening style is the people oriented listening style and my best note taking system is the outline technique. I think the people oriented listening style is best for me because I like to connect with others while listening to them. I also like listening to people. I tend to become a part of the conversation and put some input in as well. I become emotionally apart of the conversation but not too much emotionally. I like to help people out by listening to them when they need it. My best note taking system is the outline technique. I have always liked to outline my notes and I have continued to use the outline technique. To me it seems like when I outline my notes it keeps them more organized then other techniques. It also breaks everything up in to sections and titles and shows what you are writing about when you skim over your notes.
I am an Action-Oriented Listener. I really seem to prefer the Outline technique. Maybe this has been taught to and used for so many years. I have tried others this week, and I have to say, EWWWWWWWWWWWWW! The mapping system I thought maybe that would be very good for me. I love to paint and draw. So I found that that my map turned into aliens with many eyes and space weapons. Oh my! It has kind of fun to try something else just to see. Maybe if I continued to be diligent about one of the other methods they would be better. Maybe I will be able to remember what my aliens have taught me. I have rewritten my notes. I am sure that will probably cinch was written more than any one thing. I did pay more attention when mapping. Maybe I should stick with that, then rewrite. This class has been a pleasure to “explore” myself with new ideas.
While reading chapter 9, I learned that I am a people oriented listener. I also learned that my note taking style is the outline style. I've used that pretty much since I can remember. I tried the mapping system, but that really didn't work out too well. It turned out very sloppy and I ended up going back, rewriting it in outline form. I thought it would be easier, because I was taught something similar to the mapping style in elementary school, when brainstorming ideas to write stories. It was called a bubble map, but the mapping idea really doesn't work well when you're trying to copy a slide before your teacher goes to the next one.
I have found in reading page 233 that I am a people-oriented listener. I believe that one of the best ways to bond with people is to listen to what they have to tell you and really learn who they are and what they are about. You could never learn about who a person really is just by listening to what you want to hear or not even listening at all. I am a very talkative person and I can start up a conversation with just about anyone. After talking to them and listening to them I can understand what type of person they are. By talking and listening you can get a feeling of what the person is trying to get across to you or whoever may be listening. Being a people-oriented listener I believe that it makes me a great person to work with during school or even work. I can listen to what the other person thinks while also putting in my input. It help when trying to solve problems and understanding situations.
I found out that I am an action-oriented listener. I don’t like people to talk and ramble on for long periods of time. I think a short and to the point speaker is a lot better at getting their point across to the listeners. I think with my listening style prejudging is a big obstacle. The reason is because you might not like or agree with the information that the speaker is telling the group of people. I believe I tend to prejudge about 30% of the time. I try and give every speaker a fair chance. While a speaker is speaking I tend talk some of the time. During the survey I found out that I am average when it comes to talking at speeches. My problem is if the speaker rambles on or if they are boring I start to carry on side conversations which is not good to do. The last survey tends to deal with emotions. Worries, problems, fear, and anger are all examples of emotions that are put into play from an emotional listener’s standpoint. They tend to act emotionally when listening to a speaker. In the survey I was also average with this. I have to say that when it comes to moral issues or religion I definitely listen with strong emotions. I know it isn’t right but I just automatically do it when it comes to specific things. In conclusion, I think I am an average action-orientated listener but there is always room for improvement.
I am a people oriented listener.I would like to be a content oriented listner.I plan on working on that.I also now use the L-star system when before I was using the outline technique.I think the L-star is more my style.I have learned a lot about different methods since i've read this book.I plan on putting a lot of the information that I have learned into action.
After reviewing the choices I believe that I prefer Action-Oriented listening. I feel this best suites me because I do like people to get to the point. I feel that the point needs to be made and I don't need to hear extra stuff to make it sound better. I would rather you just get to the point. Because I am somewhat OCD, I do like things in an orderly fashion. So I do get somewhat irritated if things aren't put into perspective. I also believe that I may have adult ADHD, therefore, my attention span isn't that great. As far as my note taking goes I believe that The Outline Technique best suites me. I did realize this until I looked at the notes I took for another class and this is the way that I took the notes.
Cassandra L. WilsonDr. HeathCollege Skills 103-83November 25, 2012 My Listening Style My listening style is action-oriented. I am the type of listener that hates it when I think, that other people are wasting my time. I don’t know whether that is good or bad? It’s the only time that I am impatient. I don’t have any time to waste so; therefore I have a tendency to stray when I become impatient. I want to perceive the message quickly and directly. I know that I have allot of obstacles to overcome when it comes to listening. I have a bad habit of prejudging. I think that it comes from not being very open-minded. I am trying to broaden my mind by going back to school. I know that I am bias to allot of situations, but I am trying to change that way of listening now. Another obstacle that I need to work on is talking, while listening. I know that it distracts you from what is being said but it is another bad habit that I am working on. I think that I picked up allot of these bad habits, from being around unintelligent people. I am going to surround myself with other people who are already good listeners. Last but not least, I am too emotional when listening. I need to learn how to keep my emotions intact and listen attentively. I can’t let other emotional distractions stop me from listening effectively. Chapter nine really is a big help for me because now I understand, what I need to do to improve my listening style. Now I can focus on becoming a better listener and that will also make me a better student.
